Phoenix pas encore vendu
The National Hockey League is denying reports that the Phoenix Coyotes sale is imminent.
In recent days, several outlets have passed along reports that a sale to former San Jose Sharks Chief Executive Officer Greg Jamison is close to being finalized. Twitter posts by a Scottsdale-based news service reporter stirred expectations by saying the NHL had approved Jamison to become an owner.
That news would certainly be convenient for the NHL and for Glendale, where city officials have started budget talks for the coming fiscal year with big question marks regarding the cost of managing the arena where the team plays.
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly on Friday denied the report.
On Tuesday, Daly said there's no clear end in sight.
"Nothing has been finalized with Jamison or anyone else for that matter," Daly said. "Everything remains the same on the potential ownership front."
He also denied that a possible deal had been presented to the NHL Board of Governors or that there are any agreements related to the sale of the team.
Daly cautioned fans who expect word of a sale in coming days.
"I will be very surprised if there will be any type of announcement this week," he said.
Meanwhile, a Glendale spokeswoman offered no updates.
"We're still in the negotiation process," she said.
The flood of social media posts comes as the hockey season winds down and another bill will soon arrive for Glendale. This year, Glendale again pledged $25 million to the NHL to help cover losses associated with running the team and city-owned arena. That could come due this spring.
